Tried that already. that is the first step after creating the catalog.
It also throws the same errors.

Ron,

Have you tried this:

UNIX > rman
RMAN > connect target /
RMAN > connect rcvcat rman/rman@(protected)
RMAN > register database

This is what you do when all is working well. You of course need to
add the
new rman server to your target DB server 's tnsnames file, etc.
